Urban “Retired” on His Family…

Reports are swirling that Urban Meyer quit on his family to go back to coaching. Check out this excerpt from an article over on SB Nation, the rest of which can be viewed here. The article is actually pretty entertaining, so give it a look.

On December 8th of last year, Meyer released the following statement:

“The decision to step down was a difficult one. But, after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been. My family has shared both the commitment and the sacrifice required to coach at this level for so long and I would not have enjoyed the success I have had without their support.”

When asked about that statement today, Meyer responded: “I was in error in several respects there. First and foremost, I learned that youth sports is incredibly boring. The athletes are generally not at the level of University of Florida football players, or even Ohio State Buckeyes, I would imagine. Plus there are the other parents, and they want to make small talk, or worse, shoot you rude glances when you bellow at their kids when they make obvious, just totally obvious, mistakes.” Meyer went on to add that his estimates of his family as “terrific” and “amazing” may have been “premature.” “You can think those things, but spend six straight weeks actually hanging out with them and you’ll change your tune. They are apparently interested in television programs with names like ‘Top Chef’, ‘Toddlers and Tiaras’ and ‘The Voice.’” They rarely if ever want to watch All-22 game footage of University of Georgia spring practice games.”

Caught this shot of Florida great Tim Tebow (read: the Winner), “tebowing” this weekend after he heard about Urban Liar’s decision to come out of “retirement” and become head coach at Ohio State.

A Message From [Some] Florida Gators

While I can’t say this is exactly how I feel about the situation, it’s still pretty funny. Here is the funniest excerpt from the letter. Find the rest over at The Bleacher Report.

Urban, we wish you the best of luck as a Buckeye.

Actually, we really don’t. Actually, we hope that the recruits will see the way you stabbed the Florida football program in the back with a scarlet and grey knife. We hope the fans will remain skeptical of you as long as you are there. We hope that Michigan beats you every single year. We hope that every Ohio State Buckeye knows the same pain that we, the Florida Gators, feel right now.

We loved you, Urban. You had us tied around your finger. You could tell us to jump off a bridge behind you, and we’d do it. You had us thinking that the orange and blue would forever be victorious. You had us thinking that the school actually meant something to you.

And then something happened.

Here is what Urban himself had to say after his first retirement…

“To not try would be not the right thing to do,” Meyer said. “What I didn’t want to have happen, and I made this clear to [Foley], if I am able to go coach, I want to coach at one place, the University of Florida.”

“It would be a travesty, it would be ridiculous to all of a sudden come back and get the feeling back, get the health back, feel good again and then all of a sudden go throw some other colors on my shirt and go coach.”
